Summary:
The “Mental Health – Let’s uncomplicate it?” awareness campaign is a citizens’ initiative developed by the Self-Representation Groups (SRGs) of carers/users from the 12 healthcare establishments run by the Institute of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (IIHSCJ) funded by a pharmaceutical company.
Aim:
The “Mental Health – Let’s uncomplicate it?” project is being developed by the Self-Representation Groups (SRGs) of carers/users from the 12 healthcare establishments run by the Institute of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (IIHSCJ), covering the whole of Portugal (mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira) and totalling more than 60 participants. The project aims to promote accessibility to information on disability and mental health, with people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems as the main protagonists. It aims to promote the self-determination and empowerment of people with disabilities and mental health problems and their families and representatives, through the creation of a tool for disseminating and sharing information, developed by and for people with disabilities and experience of mental illness.
Main stakeholders:
The Institute of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Private Social Solidarity Institution with Health Purposes; Pharmaceutical company (funder); Self-Representation Groups (SRGs) of carers/users; Users of the IIHSSCJ; Persons with disabilities and mental health problems and their families and representatives.
Issues addressed:
Mental health; mental health stigma; facts and myths on mental health; promotion of social inclusion; rights of persons with mental illness; autonomy of persons with mental illness; available resources in the community for persons with mental illness; representation of persons with mental illness.
Outcome:
Eight short videos and corresponding posters were developed and made available on-line.
